John Paul Mitchell (born John Paul DeJoria) is a highly successful entrepreneur best known as the co-founder of John Paul Mitchell Systems, one of the most iconic brands in the beauty industry. His journey is a story of determination, overcoming adversity, and a passion for the beauty industry. John Paul DeJoria was born on April 13, 1944, in Los Angeles, California, to a Greek-Italian immigrant family. His early life was far from easy. After his parents divorced, DeJoria lived with his single mother and younger brother. Financial struggles and hardship were a part of his early years. At the age of nine, DeJoria started selling Christmas cards and newspapers to help support his family. He even spent some time in foster care after his mother couldn’t afford to raise him and his brother. Throughout his young adulthood, he worked a variety of odd jobs, including as a janitor, insurance salesman, and door-to-door encyclopedia salesman. However, it was his entry into the beauty industry that would ultimately change his life.

The Beginning of Beauty

DeJoria's career in the beauty industry began when he landed a job as a sales representative for Redken, a popular haircare brand. It was here that he learned the intricacies of the professional haircare business, developing a deep understanding of the market, salon professionals, and the needs of stylists. However, despite showing promise, he was eventually fired from Redken and another haircare company, which left him struggling to find his place. Founding of John Paul Mitchell Systems.

Founding of John Paul Mitchell Systems

In 1980, DeJoria teamed up with a Scottish hairdresser named Paul Mitchell. Together, they
decided to create a company that would offer high-quality, professional haircare products
directly to salons. The business was started with a loan of just $700, and they named it
after Mitchell. They focused on innovative products that would make a difference in the
beauty industry, like their signature product, the Paul Mitchell Shampoo One.

At the time, the professional salon industry was still developing, and stylists were looking
for quality products to use in their salons. John Paul Mitchell Systems introduced its line

with the now-iconic black-and-white packaging, which stood out from other brands. Their
goal was to empower salon professionals by providing them with products that would help their clients look and feel their best.

Overcoming Challenges
The first couple of years were extremely difficult for DeJoria and Mitchell. They didn't have enough money for traditional advertising, so they relied on word-of-mouth marketing and direct outreach to salon owners. DeJoria would often live out of his car while traveling to promote their products. Despite these challenges, their persistence and belief in their brand paid off. Slowly, their products began to gain recognition, and John Paul Mitchell
Systems became a trusted name in salons around the world. From the start, John Paul Mitchell Systems had a strong commitment to supporting salon
professionals. They maintained a focus on creating salon-only products and ensuring that hairstylists could benefit from the sale and use of their products. DeJoria and Mitchell wanted to create a company that was both sustainable and ethical. In addition to empowering salons, John Paul Mitchell Systems was one of the first beauty companies to take a stand against animal testing. They proudly remain cruelty-free to this
day, leading the way in ethical beauty practices. Sadly, Paul Mitchell passed away in 1989 from cancer, but DeJoria continued to build the
company while honoring his friend’s legacy.

Over the years, John Paul Mitchell Systems expanded to include a wide range of haircare products, tools, and education for salon professionals. One of the most significant contributions DeJoria made to the beauty industry was the creation of Paul Mitchell Schools in 2000. These cosmetology schools focus on training the next generation of hairstylists, estheticians, and beauty professionals. Paul Mitchell Schools emphasize quality education, creativity, and real-world experience to help students succeed in the beauty industry. Today, there are over 100 Paul Mitchell Schools across the United States, helping thousands of students pursue careers in hair and beauty. The schools have become highly respected institutions, providing cutting-edge training and mentorship opportunities for aspiring beauty professionals. In addition to his success in the beauty industry, John Paul DeJoria expanded his business portfolio by co-founding Patrón Spirits Company, one of the world’s leading premium tequila brands. His entrepreneurial ventures extend to sustainable and eco-friendly industries, including investments in renewable energy and clean water initiatives.

Conclusion
John Paul DeJoria’s story is one of overcoming adversity through persistence, building a successful brand from the ground up, by taking what he had learned from the brands he had been employed by, and maintaining strong ethical values. He is a living example of how dedication, innovation, and commitment to helping others can lead to lasting success. Through his journey in the beauty industry, his educational initiatives, and his
philanthropic efforts, John Paul DeJoria has left a lasting impact on the world. People can learn from his resilience, his belief in ethical business practices, and his focus on creating opportunities for others to succeed. His ideas and knowledge of business led him to co- partner with Paul Mitchell, the cosmetologist. The brand was built on the talent and the skill of not DeJoria, but Mitchell.
